Designing for the 2027 Standards: What Eleven Projects Taught Us About Getting Ahead of the Deadline

On 24 May 2027 the Secretary of State's Standards of Modern Zoo Practice for Great Britain come into force, replacing the 2012 standards that have governed licensed collections in England and Scotland for the past fourteen years. The 2012 document ran to ninety-four pages. Its replacement runs to one hundred and seventy-three, extends for the first time across England, Wales and Scotland together, and carries further transition dates reaching as far ahead as 2040 for elephant enclosure sizes. Zoo inspectors will refer to the new standards when they carry out inspections, and the collections that find the transition comfortable will be the ones that treated it as a design question rather than a paperwork question.

That distinction sits at the heart of everything on our projects page, and it is worth explaining why we publish those eleven reports at all. They are not a portfolio in the decorative sense. Each one documents a decision made under real constraints — awkward ground, a tight budget, a species with uncompromising needs, a site that looked unbuildable — and each one illustrates a principle that transfers to other collections facing the same deadline. Taken together they make an argument we believe in strongly: that welfare, compliance, visitor experience and running costs are not competing priorities to be traded off against one another, but four outcomes of the same underlying design discipline.

Constraints are usually design problems, not dead ends

The project we point people towards first began as a car park. Flat, grey, unremarkable tarmac, of the kind that exists on almost every site in the country and generates nothing for anybody. It is now a South American biome where visitors walk beneath banana blossom and children stop mid-sentence to stare upwards. Getting there meant assessing, draining and reworking the existing hard-standing, then designing climate strategy, ventilation, irrigation and lighting around the planting scheme — and designing the planting scheme around the animals rather than the other way round. Mixed-species compatibility was mapped in detail so that birds, mammals and invertebrates could share the space comfortably, each with its own resources and escape routes.

What we find most useful about that project is the question it answers, because it is the question clients most often ask us quietly: could our site really support something like that? Very frequently the answer is yes. There is a sustainability argument as well, and it is not a small one. Reusing an existing footprint avoided new ground take entirely and turned the least valuable surface on the estate into its most valuable asset.


The same lesson appears in a different form in our macaw flight. The location placed real constraints on what could be dug, loaded and disturbed, so rather than driving deep foundations into sensitive ground the aviary was built as a floating structure, sitting on a carefully calculated distributed load that spreads weight across the site instead of punching through it. That decision protected everything below and around it while still delivering the thing that actually matters to the birds — height, span and genuine flight lines. Macaws are powerful, intelligent, long-lived and easily bored, so the internal design received as much attention as the engineering: perching varied in diameter, texture and springiness to keep feet healthy, flight runs long enough for real wing use rather than a token flap, and browse points, chew stations and shaded retreats offering meaningful choice throughout the day. Awkward sites are not a reason to compromise on welfare.

Our tropical mammal enclosures for a Zoological Education Centre were built the way we think all animal housing should be built. We worked from the animals outwards, mapping vertical climbing routes, thermal gradients, gnawing and foraging opportunities, sight-line breaks and genuinely private retreat space where an animal can simply step away from the public gaze. Only once the biology was settled did we finalise the engineering, the materials and the servicing arrangements for keepers. The finished suite comfortably meets the Standards of Modern Zoo Practice, but we are prouder of what happens inside it: animals that climb, forage, socialise and rest naturally, keepers who can work safely and efficiently, and students who see authentic tropical ecology rather than a diagram in a textbook.

The sequencing matters more than it sounds. A well-designed enclosure is simultaneously a home, a teaching resource, a conservation ambassador and a visitor attraction, and there is no reason it cannot excel at all four — but only if the biology leads. The best welfare outcomes are designed in at the beginning, not retro-fitted at the end, and retro-fitting is precisely what an unprepared collection will find itself doing in the spring of 2027.

The ETFE roof we installed across a tropical biome in partnership with Vector Foiltec makes the operational case plainly. Living tropical collections need light, and a great deal of it. Glass filters out much of the spectrum plants depend upon, and it is heavy, fragile and expensive to span. ETFE cushions transmit remarkably high levels of natural daylight, including the wavelengths that keep banana, heliconia and palm collections thriving, and they are extraordinarily light, effectively self-cleaning, highly insulating and tough enough to shrug off decades of British weather. Running costs fall, plant health improves, and the space beneath feels bright and alive rather than gloomy and glazed. That is a welfare improvement and a cost saving arriving in the same decision, which is the sort of outcome that makes a capital case straightforward to defend.

Living habitats reduce workload as well as improving welfare

Our amphibian zone is the clearest demonstration we have of bioactive husbandry earning its keep twice over. Beneath the planting sits a drainage layer, a living soil and a resident clean-up crew of springtails and woodlice that quietly process waste before it ever becomes a problem. Live plants stabilise humidity, soften light, provide cover and give the animals genuine choice about where to sit, hide, hunt and breed, while misting, ventilation and temperature gradients are tuned to the species rather than to the room.

Amphibian skin is astonishingly sensitive, and stable humidity with clean, biologically active substrate makes a visible difference to condition, appetite and natural behaviour, with breeding success tending to follow. Just as pleasingly, maintenance drops — there is no more stripping out and sterilising a barren tank every week, and the hours released go back into enrichment and observation. There is a powerful conservation story to tell as well. Amphibians are among the most threatened groups on the planet, and a beautifully planted, obviously thriving display gives visitors a reason to care about chytrid fungus, habitat loss and captive breeding programmes in a way that a bare vivarium never will.

At the demanding end, the team is the safety system

Working with Category 1 hazardous animals is a privilege, and it is also an area where there is simply no room for improvisation. At this level everything is systems and discipline: protected-contact protocols, double-gated access, secure barrier specifications, lock and key control, containment planning, firearms and immobilisation arrangements, and escape-response procedures rehearsed until they are second nature. Every element is documented, tested and aligned with zoo licensing requirements and the Standards of Modern Zoo Practice, ready for inspection at any time.

Yet the single greatest safety factor is never the ironmongery. It is the team. Confident, well-drilled staff who understand why a procedure exists will follow it correctly on a wet Tuesday in February when nobody is watching. A great deal of our work at this end of the practice is therefore training, mentoring and quiet culture-building — making sure that challenge is welcomed, near-misses are reported openly, and complacency never gets a foothold.

Biosecurity follows exactly the same logic, which is why we gave it a place on the projects page despite it never making the highlights reel. Get it right and nothing happens, which is precisely the outcome you want. Good biosecurity is not a cupboard full of disinfectant but a set of clear, proportionate habits woven into the working day: defined quarantine pathways for new arrivals, sensible zoning between collections, footbaths that are actually charged and actually used, PPE discipline, dedicated equipment per area, and a cleaning hierarchy everyone understands without having to think about it. The stakes are considerable, and avian influenza alone has taught the sector some hard lessons in recent years. Our approach is deliberately practical, because complicated systems get quietly abandoned while simple ones become second nature, and that is where real resilience comes from.

Welfare-led work reaches beyond the licensed collection

Two of the eleven reports sit outside the licensed zoo estate, and we include them deliberately. Our family support sessions with alpacas show what animal-assisted engagement looks like when it is built on proper welfare foundations. Alpacas are curious but cautious, gentle without being demanding, and utterly honest — an alpaca will not pretend to be comfortable when it is not, and that honesty is precisely the point. Children learn to slow down, soften their voices, read body language and wait to be approached rather than rushing in, so confidence grows because the animal grants it rather than because an adult has instructed it. Clear welfare boundaries protect the herd, group sizes stay small, and there is always a straightforward route out for any animal that would rather step back. The difference between a willing animal and a tolerated one is obvious to everybody present.

Our school zoo days and elective visits make the same welfare-first principle visible to pupils. Sessions are mapped to genuine learning outcomes, whether that is Key Stage curriculum content, BTEC animal management units, the Animal Care T Level or the V Levels arriving shortly. Risk assessments, safeguarding, hygiene routines, group ratios and contingency plans are all in place before anybody arrives, animals participate on their terms, and pupils learn a great deal from watching that principle applied. Careers in animal care can feel remote and mysterious to a fifteen-year-old, and a day like this makes them tangible.

What this means for your collection before May 2027

The common thread across all eleven projects is that the collections which handle inspection calmly are the ones that designed their way to compliance rather than documenting their way to it. We help collections prepare for licensing inspections without the usual last-minute panic, through honest gap analysis, practical prioritisation and clear evidence trails, and the earlier that conversation happens the cheaper and less disruptive the answer tends to be.
