Bioactive habitats with live plants

This is bioactive husbandry doing what it does best, and we could talk about it all day. What you are looking at is not decoration; it is a functioning miniature ecosystem, designed from the substrate upwards to look after itself.

Beneath the planting sits a drainage layer, a living soil and a resident clean-up crew of springtails and woodlice that quietly process waste before it ever becomes a problem. Live plants stabilise humidity, soften light, provide cover and give the animals genuine choice about where to sit, hide, hunt and breed. Misting, ventilation and temperature gradients are tuned to the species rather than to the room.

The welfare gains are considerable. Amphibian skin is astonishingly sensitive, and stable humidity with clean, biologically active substrate makes a visible difference to condition, appetite and natural behaviour. Breeding success tends to follow. Just as pleasingly, maintenance drops — no more stripping out and sterilising a barren tank every week.

There is a powerful story to tell here, too. Amphibians are among the most threatened groups on the planet, and a beautifully planted, obviously thriving display gives visitors a reason to care about chytrid fungus, habitat loss and captive breeding programmes in a way that a bare vivarium never will.
